When Aleta woke up she was alone. She walked out side and sniffed the snow. She looked around at the winter wonderland, and to think it was not even winter yet! A robin sang its song from a tree that lay at the edge of the small meadow. She fallowed the trail left from Silverpelt cantering to a new destination. She reached the clearing he was in and whinnied. She went and nuzzled him then they groomed each other. She started to get hungry, but all the uncovered grass was eaten. She used her front hoof to dig the cold fluff away from the sweet grass. She ate for a while, and was finally full.

Silverpelt slept, standing in the open field near to Aleta. His breath blew in and out, his belly swelled and contracted. Ears flickering, tail swishing softly in the cool fall breeze, which swirled colorful leaves about. Suddenly he awoke as an elk bugled. He reared a little, breathing in the scents, while noting the bugling was growing distant. Hmmm... he wondered, what was going on? Silverpelt didn't scent anything dangerous right then. Wait, what was that... growling? Snarling? He stood alert, ears poised. Time passed slowly, second by second... Silverpelt breathed slowly, calming down. He turned, facing downwind towards Aleta. He half reared and nickered happily to her. Then he saw her expression (a fearful expression of Aleta's is ok, isnt it? considering the circumstances...) and spun back, facing a terrible sight he was sorry he hadn't smelt. A tawny mountain lion, called cougar, or puma, one of the worst predators besides wolves and bears. Silverpelt tensed, suddenly realizing what had stirred the elk, and that the forest had gone quiet.

Aleta's fear full gaze turned to rage at the beast. Its tawny hide was a lighter version of hers. She was not afraid of the Cougar, she had killed many before. She cantered up to Silverpelt "Don't worry, run up to it and rear, make as much noise as you can. Then when It tuns to run strike it on the back and try to crush its legs." She was already thinking strategically. She curricle around so that the three were in a triangle formation. "When I say go, we both gallop toward it and go with the plan." she said as she watched the cat look back and forth between the horses. "GO!" she yelled. She galloped toward the beast eas flat. She reared and let out a loud cry. The larg cat's eyes got huge as it took in the sght of the horses. It spun around and Aleta's frot hoof connected with the cats hind leg, crushing bone.

Silverpelt, in haste, listened to Aleta's wise advice, and fiercely reared. He screamed loudly, striking his hooves towards the yowling mountain lion. He galloped, kicking as he strode towards the mountain lion. The lion growled, baring it's teeth, as it started backing away from the assault. He could hear it scream as Aleta broke it's leg, and he reared and pounded it. It turned and fled quickly. Silverpelt screamed as he chased it, landing blows rapidly. And don't ever come back! He threatened the terrified mountain lion. He turned happily back to Aleta, eyes shining, nose breathing deeply, ears pricked. Suddenty he smelled a strange scent... What could it be? Follow me, quickly! he called to Aleta, racing down the mountain, following the elusive scent... (will post in rochbereth's mare's post )

Aleta smelled the sent too. She could tell it was another horse but she did not know if it was a mare in search of a herd or a stallion looking to steal. She fallowed Silverpelt. They dodged trees and ferns as they sped down the mountain. Aleta jumped a fallen tree as it laid in her path. The birds started to sing again telling them of no threat. She saw a doe with a young fawn at her side as the galloped through a small meadow. The sky above them was slightly cloudy. Most of the trees they passed were evergreens but a few of them had lost there leaves, and looked like they belonged in a grave yard. She stayed right at Silverpelts withers.

A mare jogged out from the trees and into the sun light that shone down on the cold snow in a meadow she knew. Aleta looked around, and seeing no danger, walked to the center. She pawed the snow away from the ground and nibbled on what little grass she could get. She had wandered away while Slverpelt and the dark stallion were trying to figure out who got the mare. She had walked all the way back home, and now she was lonely and had no one to talk to. Aleta hoped the two stallions figured out who the mare should go with, so that Silverpelt could come home soon. She gave up on trying to find grass and wadded threw the snow and into their cave. It was cold but at least it wasn't wet. The dark buckskin mare laid down by the opening and rested, watching for her stallion.

Silverpelt charged closer and closer to the cave, through the melting snow, Dancer at his side. He climbed up the final slope, into the meadow. Joyeously whinnying, the fine stallion pranced about, his heart pumping strongly from the run. Energy soared thorugh his mighty body, fueling his great excitement further. Dancer! Dancer, we're here! There's the cave! He looked about, expecting Aleta to be close, coming to greet the new mare. He was very excited to see her, he missed the lovely mare that was his lead mare now. Silverpelt trotted into the cave, followed closely by Dancer. Aleta! Aleta, we're here! Silverpelt called loudly, echoing into the silent cave. A fear, a worry crept over him as the calls weren't answered. Aleta! Where are you? Come out, come out, wherever you are! Silverpelt went further into the cave, cantering through the rooms until he came to their hidden spot at the back of the cave. Hoofprints! He had not seen hoofprints outside, because of fresh snow covering the melting piles. Silverpelt closely examined the prints. It looks like... three horses? Some are very old, those look like mine. Then there are Aleta's, a bit more numerous and fresher. But these others... He sniffed, smelling them carefully. That stallion!!! He raged angrily. How dare that stallion come here! How indeed? He must have come here sometime Silverpelt and Dancer were sleeping, sometime after he had met her and that blasted stallion! Aleta!!! Where are you! Where are you!!! He cried to the cool winds, heartbroken over his loss.

Dancer breathed heavily as she cooled herself off from the long run she had just galloped.Once she felt comfortable, she gazed around, excited to be in a herd, and excited to be in her new home. Dancer splashed through the slush, sniffing around, very curious. She slowly approached the cave, but began to trot when she heard wild cries. Nervous, she hesitated before stepping into the blackness that was eternal night within. Dancer then blinked her eyes occasionally, getting used to the deep dark. She carefully followed the scent, that sweet sunny stallionly scent, and made her way though cave room after room, til light and shadows brightened and there stood her stallion, the fierce grey charger, and approached him. She gently went to his side and nuzzled him after she sensed something was direly wrong.

The unhappy stallion felt the nuzzling of the lovely paint mare he had brought home to the cave. Aleta, he told her, not here. That stallion came here and probably took her. He leaned onto Dancer, and felt her soft caresses. They seemed to calm him, to relax him. After a while, he spoke again. This was a special spot of ours. It is not very windy, or snowy, and wild carrots grow here in summer. We were already planning a foal. He paused, then continued. I had planned to come down into the valleys with both of you, if you decided to come into this herd, and graze on lush spring grass. Suddenly Silverpelt snapped his head high, Perhaps we should still go down into the valleys! Maybe we can find her! At any rate, we both need to graze a lot to make up for winter. Come summer, we will return, so we can keep cool in the cave, and begin to store grasses in a room of the cave, we will need them next winter. Silverpelt looked and felt energized, full of hope. He turned to the marvelous mare beside him. Are you strong enough to handle a trip to the valleys? The rivers are all in flood with snowmelt, and they will probably be dangerous. We can wait a few days, if we need to.

Dancer tossed her mane as she heard Silverpelt's proposal. It sounds like a good one to me, she thought. Then the paint spoke. I think, even though we are tired, and even though the path will surely still have snow in it, i think we should head down now. The flooded rivers are certainly a worry. Thus if we get a start today, they will be lower than they would be if we waited a week or two. That is what i think. Now, i don't know what the weather will be like, it could cool down and snow and the rivers would not fill up as fast. But i am hungry for fresh spring grass, and the sooner we get there, the better. But we must be careful, when we get there, not to eat very much fresh grass at first, or woe is us. She walked through the rest of the cave, then trotted to the river for a quick mouthful of water, then began climbing down the mighty mountain range.

Winter had passed and spring had just started. Aleta raised her head as the rest of the herd entered the sleeping spots, The large stallion that had beat her into joining his herd entered as well not realizing his stolen prize was planning to escape. Aleta snuck into the thick woods and bolted towards her stallion that she missed so much. Being forced to leave Silverpelt tore her heart out, but the good thing was that when she found him she would be whole again. She raced through the trees and towards the arrowheads.
The next morning...
Aleta was dripping sweat, but she was so close to home that she could see Silverpelts boundary. She trotted to the stream and rinsed her self off, and after grazing and letting her pelt dry she went and laid down under her favorite oak tree and drifted to sleep. She drempt about the reunion that would heal her heart, while she waited for her stallion to come to her.

Silverpelt climbed slowly up the pass into his lands. He had been in the valleys too long. He snorted fiercely as he pushed himself farther on. He only hoped, when he got up there, that both his mares would be there. He had searched far and wide for Aleta, and not found her. So, he headed home in the hopes that she would have found his way there.
He passed by the lands of the Mauris herd, with a stiff nod to Jasper, the stallion of that herd. So close... He muttered, getting closer as he climbed higher into the mountains. Almost there. Silverpelt climbed, trotting in his haste to reach his mountain valley. There was the meadow, the tree, the stream, the cave entrance. And there was a horse lying under an oak tree! Silverpelt raced up, rearing and sniffing, but when he recognized the scent of his loved Aleta, he ran up to her, drinking up her scent like water ijn a desrts, and lay down by her sleeping form.

Hearing something, Aleta woke to find silverpelt laying next to her. She nuzzled her stallion, but made sure not to wake him. She got up and got a drink of the refreshing water, and after grabbing a few bites of grass she settles back down next to Silverpelt. She shook her long dark mane until it rested correctly over her neck, then put her head down and closed her eyes as the darkness settled in. Dreams of being with silverpelt ran through her mind along with images of foals, oh how she could not wait for winter to leave and spring to come!

Dancer stumbled into the high valley as darkness fell. It was a little chilly. She took a quick dring then walked over to a couple of sleeping horses. She already knew Silverpelt was one of the two. So this must be Aleta... Dancer settled down beside Silverpelt, drawing heat from him.

Silverpelt awoke early the next morning. He enjoyed the heat coming from two bodi- TWO bodies? He raised his head and saw both Aleta and Dancer beside him. Finally both his mares were together. Happiness overcame him. And soon it would be Spring, nd breeding would ensue, and in a year or less, soon there would be frolicome foals. His was the duties and pleasures of a herd stallion. Speaking of duties... he took a glance at the clearing. All seemed well. Silverpelt rose up, shaking the snow off his back, and walked a bit, checking thing out further. He walked through the cave, which got warmer as he went deeper and warmed his muscles. He came though the passage to the other end of the cave, sniffed about. Coming back around, he stood near his mares, taking in the majestic view.

Harks flicked as tiny amounts of white powder fell from them. Raising her head Aleta saw a mare next to her. Surprised she looked around and found Silverpelt. Her dark boyce rose from the ground and she shook as the snow cascaded down her sides. The snow gave a slight crunch sound under her hooves as she made her was to Silverpelt. "Your back! And you brought another mare!" Aleta was glad to have her stallion back and now there was another mare for her to talk to!

Silverpelt nuzzled Aleta. This is Dancer, and i am indeed back, and glad to be! He walked out in the meadow, and began digging around for edible bits to fill his hunger. It was easier where it was shallower. After a drink and some browsing, Silverpelt alked back into the cave. He addressed his two mares, softly. I don't think we're prepared for living up here right now. I think we should head down the mountain and travel south to warmer climes until spring. It will be more dangerous with strange stallions on the prowl, but it's better than starving. What do you two think?

Dancer snorted. If things had gone to plan, we would have harvested grass all autumn and been about as snug as frogs in a lake. If we don't get to warmer places, we won't last what's left of the winter. Which isn't much. As far as i can tell, we should probably try, at least.

Aleta listened to what both Silverpelt and dancer had to say then she thought for a moment "Well, personally I think we should head south to the warmer lands so there is enough food. The Mauris herd is now near there so we need to make sure we stay clear of their boarder. But it's up to you Silverpelt, the winter is almost over and we might be able to dig up enough food, but our stomachs won't be totally full." She looked over at Dancer and smiled "I'm Aleta by the way, you must be Dancer!"

Then we'll head down the pass before it starts flooding. He nuzzled his two mares. But before we do, do you two want to meet me in the cave? Silverpelt winked and grinned, trotting towards the mouth of the cave.
